Pittsburgh to Robinson Area

Any body know a bike friendly route out to Robinson? I see on the Pgh Bike Map that Noblestown Road is recommended through Carnegie, what's it like heading further out of town, towards Settler's Cabin Park?

None of it is perfectly bike friendly.

Whenever I ride out there I basically follow Rt 60 the whole way there. West End Circle -> Noblestown Rd -> Through Crafton -> Steubenville Pike into Robinson. There are a couple of different options in Crafton, but they all end up with varying degress of no-shoulder, high speed traffic situations. Noblestown isn't bad at all, and neither is the descent into Crafton. Steubenville Pike couldn't get much worse, and I never found the alternate Campbells Run much friendlier, just not as steep.Criss-crossing the 79 interchange ramps on Steubenville Pike also is a bit hair-raising at points.

Noblestown is pretty sweet at least as far as Sturgeon.

One way to Robinson that I like is to take Noblestown through Carnegie, then hang a right on Cubbage. Up the hill, left on Collier/Ewing, gentle right on Ridge Rd at the intersection with Baldwin, and you're at Settlers. You can follow Ridge over the highway to Campbell's Run, or take Bayer Rd to hit Steubenville Pike on the west end of Robinson.

I've taken Noblestown Rd (or whatever it changes name to as you go through the outer towns) all the way out to Burgettstown, and it was pretty good riding the whole way.

There isn't really a bike friendly route to Robinson.I've tried several times.Unfortunately there's no bike trail from within Pittsburgh that goes outside the city.Rumor is,(and again just hearsay) that the southside trail will be extended to Neville Island and then you'll be able to easily get on the Montour Trail to Robinson. The problem is nobody knows when, and even if, this will occur. It may not even happen in our lifetime. We are still way behind the times!!

This route (Google Maps) is a little hilly & twisty, but I often see folks riding along these roads. Most roads have 25 or 35 mph speed limits except for Montour Run Road right near Robinson Town Center (it's 45), and you probably know that West Carson St. is 35 but most cars go 60.

PS> I'm a board lurker and not a road rider, but I saw this thread and decided to sign up to offer an alternate route.

I take Steuben the whole way but I'm kind of on the fringe of Robinson, close to 79.

According to Google Maps Noblestown is only a slightly longer assuming I don't make the right where it turns into 50 and take Crafton Blvd instead. I might have to give that a try, looks like there are a few ways to get back to Steuben. Hoping one of them is a little flatter :)

When I worked in Robinson, I thought about biking, but never worked up the courage. I did scout out a way, though. Here's the eastbound path: Steubenville Pike, past I-79, across the Thornburg Bridge, peel L onto Ingram Ave, R Berry, L Windgap, L bend onto Singer, R Valley, quick rightleft onto 7th/Tunnel, R Island, L onto McKees Rocks Bridge, cross 65, bend R onto Termon, R Fleming, L Antrim, R McClure, R Woods Run, and from there find your way through the NSide via any of 117 ways.

Your worst traffic is Steubenville. No real tough climbs eastbound. Westbound a lot of it is uphill, the worst being Antrim and Fleming, but a good bit of it is either light rolling or level.

Next to US19 through Wexford Flats, the worst suburban road I can think of for cycling in Allegheny County is Steubenville Pike.

Thanks, I may give that a shot although I'm fairly sure I'll get lost. :) According to Google maps it is ~4.5 miles longer than the direct route on Steuben though.

Well, I wasn't the OP but thanks to everyone for all the options.
