Plea saves bridge pier from demolition

Just hours before a crew was scheduled to demolish a large stone pier in the Allegheny River, the head of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission stepped in Monday to save it, buying time for groups that hope to use the support to build a pedestrian path to Fourteen Mile Island.

It's good to hear that they could save the one pier for a potential bridge to Fourteen Mile Island, but it's a shame more couldn't be save to allow for a full crossing there of the Allegheny River.


However, if the Hulton Bridge re-use project is successful, I suppose that might be a moot point.


Man, how I'm impatiently waiting for an Allegheny River Trail now...

we're all so spoiled now. we went from no trails to one to three, and now we can't understand why there aren't more.
