Potential BikeFest Event: Oddbike Tryouts

This was kinda spurred by the Bike Contest thread, specifically the bit about "Test ride a different kind of bike than you normally ride".

I'm thinking it would be fun to get a bunch of less-usual rides in one place: some 'bents, tall bikes, unicycles, tandems, and suchlike. (Maybe some fixies for those of us who've never tried one ;-)) Take a few hours, try out each others toys, learn a new skill or two, have some embarrassing photos taken...maybe do a weird-bike parade through town later on.

I can get the recumbent bikes and trikes, but would need others to kick in for the rest of the steeds (Nick, Stu, I'm looking at you...). Anyone interested? PM me, or feel free to comment here...if the idea sucks for some reason, I shan't be bummed.

Oh, yeah..just to pick a date, Saturday August 7th.

I can ride facing backwards on my handlebars. Does that count?

I'm down! I'll bring the blood bike and anything else I have done by then.

Anybody have an Orbea Orca I could try out? I've never ridden one.

But really, sounds like fun.

@joeframbach: If you wish to label yourself as an odd bike in hopes of being test ridden, you have my blessing.

@ndromb: Sweet. I figured you'd be up for such shenanigans. :)

@edmonds59: I'll see if I can get Chuck K. to bring his $5K+ carbon fiber racing 'bent along...would that be close enough?

I'll try and get the rohloff'ed bike fixed up by then.

Oooh.

Tentatively on board with a tandem. I'd love to try out a "standard". Fixies just aren't that weird.

I'd like to try an internal gear hub. Does anyone have one available?

See a few posts above. I have a bike with a Rohloff speedhub, but it was involved in an accident last fall. The hub is pretty much bombproof, so thats fine, but I will try and get the bike back to ridable condition before August.

are there any liability issues with this? hate to be that guy, but getting hurt on someone else's bike seems like it could raise some issues.

'Tis a fine question. If I run it as a WPW ride with sign-up sheet and waiver, I believe club insurance would cover liability, but I Am Not A Lawyer.

dwillen, when I first read your post I thought it said, "rofl-bike". I had all kinds of pictures in my mind of what kind of bike would cause you to roll on the floor laughing...

ndromb, I think your blood bike would qualify as a rofl-bike.

Wait until you see the next tall bike...

I think there are lots of even relatively normal bikes that people would like to try if they haven't ridden them before: folders, fixed-gears (road-conversion vs. track geometries?), coaster-brakes, 2-speed kick-backs, tandems of various sorts, suspension in all its variety. Sounds like a good idea.

Nate, we're thinkin' alike like Mike 'n Ike.

I have both a cargo bike and a folding bike people might like to try. I know if I had been able to try a folding bike I would have bought one ALOT sooner.

EDIT:

except I will not be in pittsburgh from August 1-8th. totally bummed I miss the begining of BikeFest :(

Five unicycles in the fleet, only two of them in rideable condition. But I have two months. Just gotta get busy, is all.

Gonna have to brush up on my uni skills. Used to be able to ride pretty well, but I've never been able to ride a wheelie worth a damn. Can't figure it out.

I've only been riding for 2 years and I've been happily cruising around on the 2 hybrids I've owned. Still, I'd love to try a road bike that fits me - just to find out what I'm missing. I'm not particularly interested in trying anything odd, just looking to see what others experience on their not-so-odd bikes.

Railcycle?

I could bring along several quirky old bikes to this. The tandem, 3-speed roadie, fixed gear, beach cruiser with big old ape hangers, and if we really wanted something wacky I have a failed attempt at a home-made tandem that works best as sort of a long-bike that you ride laying on your stomach. Is that dangerous enough?

Oh yeah, who wants to help me ride them all there?
