Repaving the Oval. Please don't ride there

Reposted from the ACA list:

The ACA Track Paving is underway and on schedule. Work on the track started last Thursday morning as planned. A. Folino paving started the project by milling and cleaning the existing surface. By this morning, they'd circled the track once with a 2" base layer of binding material (coarse asphalt). With the nice weather, they expect to have most of the finishing work (additional 1" top coat) done by the end of the week. Once the paving is finished, we'll hope for a good rain and a week of curing so that we can get back to racing the week of May 3rd.

Some highlights of the paving project that you may be interested in hearing:

* The ENTIRE track is being paved - not just the 1/2 mile oval but the area inside the oval as well. That includes the figure eight and the inner parking lot.

* A "connector" lane has been established between the inner lane (P Course finish) and the figure eight to the left. This will allow for an internal warm-up loop as well as options in running the P course.

* New finish lines will be painted as well as a 200 meter line before the finish. The City is using a water-based paint that should limit any slickness. The City will also paint an inner "apron" line all the way around the track as we have now. We have specifically asked that as little paint as possible be used.

* New curbs will be constructed all around the track. The curbs will be sloped and rise up over the existing 90 degree curbs already in place. This should make for a safer racing environment and provide better water runoff.

I've included a few pictures of the work being done from earlier today. You can view them here.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. And remember, please STAY AWAY from the track until the work is done. It's best to stay out of the workers' way until all of the work is complete. Than you again for your patience while the work is being done.

See you the week of May 3rd.

Awesome. Glad this worked out. The city asked me a few months ago if they should repave this and I told them PLEASE do, but check with ACA! Glad they followed up and worked directly with ACA on what the org wanted.

I still think the most awesome thing would be if there was a path/trail/lanes along Negley Run Blvd. and Washington Blvd. so one could actually reasonably access the oval by bike as well as actually biking ON it.

That said, that whole area and the Allegheny River Blvd. corridor could use improved bike infrastructure as well. I really hope those CMU students see success in preserving and converting the Hulton Bridge that connects Harmar and Oakmont into a ped/bike bridge like Hot Metal.

Just food for thought...

its coming. along with a bike/ped path from morningside down to the river thru heth's run, park and althletic fields where the main zoo lot is now and a bit of singletrack winding its way around the park. contact the parks conservancy's highland park team or ptag to find out how to help.
