Ride of Silence

Hi folks,

Just got a call from the guy trying to "organize the world" in a ride of silence. The guy offering to be the point person in Pittsburgh stepped away from it. Would anyone be willing to organize this ride locally? Unfortunately we just don't have any more bandwidth right now and are getting dangerously close to burning out our volunteers too with all the events coming up around bike to work day, vo fest, and pedal pittsburgh.

No pressure. I just told the guy that we would try to get someone interested locally, but I couldn't promise anything. It's supposed to be a week from Wednesday.

Possibly - let you know more tonight.

Any one have a link to what this is about?

The WPW will do this. Jim Logan or I will call you, Scott, for your guys's contact info.

I would like to ride to honor the memory of my friend Matthew Sperry who was killed in 2003.

Thanks Lyle this is a huge help to us. Glad to see this happening in Pittsburgh.

Given the weather forecast, we're discouraging people from showing up at this event. Since we can't reach everyone to cancel, Jim and I will show up with lights and fenders to ride with whomever is there, anyway, but we'd rather not take chances with the safety of novices in a thunderstorm. We are planning to do a rain-date Ride of Silence early on Memorial Day, same as last year.

Thanks for the update (and thanks for organizing - especially on such short notice). I was planning to go but definitely don't like riding in lightning conditions... hopefully I can make the makeup date.

so the ride is still on despite the weather? i was looking forward to this

There is an 80% chance of precipitation and a severe thunderstorm watch, including the possibility of hail. Decision about whether to ride is going to be pretty much played by ear down to the minute. If the weather is just crappy but not super-dangerous (hail, lightning, high winds), we'll ride, but we want people to feel comfortable bailing out and doing it again later. Bring lights and rain gear.

Where is this starting at? Where are the additional ride details?

From the radar map, it looks like we might just get lucky.

not sure what your interpretation is, but don't count on it. the system over us right now has been sitting there, rotating and dropping rain for over 24 hours now. it doesn't currently show any sign of doing anything different.

though if you leave right after it rains, you will likely get a brief period of sun, since that seems to be the pattern du jour.

By lucky, I mean that it looks like most of the Tstorms are a bit (north, south)east of the city. But rain, yeah, that will happen.

part of the problem is that locally, the system has actually been moving west for the past day or so. it's swirling counterclockwise, or at least appears to be. it's all very strange, and it makes you throw your assumptions about static radar images (e.g. systems move from west to east, usually slightly northward) out the window.

Pittsburgh is the new location of LOST ? :)

Circulation is counterclockwise around a low pressure system (in the N hemisphere), so that part makes sense based on my vast experience of one class in meteorology.

The front itself has kind of stalled, upper level winds are pretty light, and there's no real high around pushing it along. I think the jetstream is kinda weak too based on my flight to Utah last week (faster than expected westbound, longer eastbound) - yeah, in fact you can barely find winds > 50kt even up above 30000ft.

Crumbs, I went with the presumption that this had stayed canceled.

The Jetstream took a wrong turn at Sheboygan and is hanging out with the threat to the North, the Canadians, miring us in our own little atmospheric Sargasso Sea.

"An upper-level low situated over the eastern third of the United States has disconnected from the main jet stream flow. This "cut-off" low is also being blocked from advancing west to east due to a blocking ridge located downstream located over eastern Canada and the north Atlantic." http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/days-of-northeast-rain_2011-05-16

Yeah, I wish I would have looked out the window or checked here to realize the ride was back on... hope it went well.

it did go well, i don't think we got any actual rain during the ride. thanks for being so welcoming, everyone!

Well, you had been riding hard for an hour before that. I'll be your witness.
