I'm guessing you would want to go to the Glenwood bridge and up that way, rather than Beck's run.

Route Advice
I am looking for a route from Shadyside to Bethel Park. I assume either 18th st to Brownsville or Becks Run to Brownsville then to 88. Any advice?

Glenwood Bridge to Streets Run to Brownsville is decent (although the intersection of Streets Run and 51 kinda blows goats, the rest is fine).

+1 reddan Streets run is a nice slow climb except for the last hundred yards or so, which is steeper, narrower and more heavy traffic. But once across route 51, becomes ok again. Streets run does have a few at grade RR tracks so be carful crossing (one train a day but tracks are at weird angles).

Not sure if this is a possibility, but couldn't the person go downtown and then take the T depending on how far away from the stop the commuter is?

18th to Brownsville is ok too, especially on the weekends. It gets a lot of traffic around rush hour but it can be fun to ride past all the cars stuck bumper to bumper. Further south, Curry Rd is a good alternative to Brownsville.
