Self destructing bike/lock

I think this is smart, but the obvious problem is that a thief will probably just steal it anyways and potentially ruin the bike. My friend in college had one of those locks that mounts to the rear brake bridge, and he'd just lock the lock and set his bike up with a kickstand. It got stolen a bunch of times but the thieves always just ditched it when they realized the couldn't ride it. I think it needs to be REALLY OBVIOUS that the bike is locked even though there is no traditional lock present.

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish, really.

For thief re-education purposes I'd really prefer a system similar to the one above, but which leaves the bike rideable and arms the small shock-sensitive explosive charge in the seat post.

I'm just trying to wrap my mind around doing ANYTHING involving a gas meter, explosives or not. For purposes of illustration, couldn't they have used a bike rack, a fence, heck even a guy wire for a utility pole?
