several days bike storage

i'm planning on heading from buffalo to pittsburgh tomorrow, and i would like to bike halfway. so, i'll get up in the morning, bike to erie, then bus from erie to pittsburgh.

i'll be heading back to buffalo next week and won't have time to bike while in pittsburgh (though i do have another bike there if i need it), so i'd rather leave my bike in erie rather than go through the hassle of boxing it up and taking it on a greyhound.

has anyone ever done anything like this? do you have suggestions for what to look for, in general, or specific to erie? i will want to leave my bike for about a week, out of the elements, and away from potential thieves.

how big are the lockers at the bus station in erie?

that or, lock it in front of the police station.

There is a Presque Isle Bicycle Club with a website. Maybe one of their members has a yard/garage with extra space? Next best option (on I've used in the past) is try to find a volunteer Fire Department that is willing to let you park nearby. They might not have an area out of the elements, but they tend to have a lot of activity 24 hours, so theft is somewhat deterred.

+1 on the volunteer fire station or even a church. A friend of mine use to ship his camping gear to a church in Montana the week before his fishing trips. I think locking a bike up would be similar. Don't forget to offer a donation.

Since you're taking the bus - try calling and asking the manager at the station. A bus station that's basically a giant garage has to have some safe corner to lock up. All they can say is no.

@edmonds: i just did that. he seemed a bit too excited to tell me no. basically the only option they have is an outdoor rack right outside the station. they have no lockers or bike boxes. the station itself closes at 9:30, but he tells me there are patrols all night long. it's my least favorite option, but i suppose in a pinch it'll do.

there's a hospital right across the street, as well as the erie county planning department (which google also lists as bicycle and fire safety), so i'll make a few more calls. if i can find a nearby supervised lot with a quality rack, i might let that suffice.

@HV Another idea that comes to mind is to look up the guy who helped you out on your Buffalo trip a couple of years ago. Did you get his name/# by any chance?
