Looks like they are about to go biking through lava flows or something.

I've been there but not on a bike. There are places that drive you to the top of the volcano, supply you with a bike, and you ride back. You coast literally the whole way down.

The ride up suxed & the ride down is kind of chilly. All I had was arm warmers and it was cold when we went thru the clouds.

I booked some assisted rides with Go Cycle Maui and a group of us went up the hill together. They can only take you to the entrance of the park then you are on your own

The ride down from the summit is the most awsom ride I have ever been on.

Woah! i just hiked Haleakala in February, and I have a close friend who lives in Maui (orig. from Pgh), who hikes it every weekend to keep fit, who will freak out (in a good way) when she sees those stickers.

I took my newphew to Maui. We both wanted to ride bikes down taht hill but couldn't reach a compromise - he wouldn't consider riding UP the hill, and I wouldn't consider paying someone to drive up up the hill.

Note: Sunrise is supposed to be spectacular from up there, and if you do see it when you first arrive, you will still be on Pittsburgh time. So it will sem 6 hours later than it is.

Haleakala is a National park & there are no guard rails along the road. There have been some very bad bicycle accidents and they have banned tour companies from bringing any bikes past the entrance gate. The bike tours that take you up the hill now only start at about 6400ft.

Edit - I forgot to take the stickers off the sign. So if a park ranger does not remove them they are probably still up.
