Well, that's still better than I thought a message with that title was going to go...

Have you ever read the book "One Child", by Torey Hayden? It's about a teacher and one six-year-old girl who had a police history a mile long, including attempted murder, and follows the teacher's successful efforts to reverse the direction of her life. Things happen for a reason. I'm sure there is more to the story than is being said here, just as there was a lot to be revealed in Hayden's girl's story. Individual, group, family, societal -- stuff is likely messed up at every level, and this is more a symptom than a cause.

Jesus that's messed up. That kid's mother needs to spend a night in jail. I don't give a shit about "other circumstances".

The story and the parent's comments remind me of a certain old Warren Zevon song.

I dont' know about the kid. Doesnt' look like he has good prospects. On the other hand, what about the officer? Paul Abel still SHOULD NOT BE ON THE POLICE FORCE. He is not what I call a reliable witness. We need a civilian review board with teeth. Lately there's been twice that I've seen the name of an officer that SHOULD NOT BE ON THE FORCE associated with bicycle crimes. It's a shame about the kid and there doesnt' seem to be much we can do about that, but we can all call for a powerful civilian police review board.
