South Hills Road Riding

Does/Has anyone road Streets Run Road toward or away from Hays? I drive it daily, and it would cut about 30 minutes off my bike commute, but I haven't gotten the nerve up to try it on my bike. The sight lines toward Hays and the "attitude" of the drivers has me worried.

Any advice is appreciated.

I’ve ridden it only occasionally, but have never had any issues with drivers. I usually wear neon & run daytime blinkies though so YMMV. The only place that gets really squirrly is at the intersection at rt. 51 since it’s uphill and narrow. The section closer to Hays has never been an issue even during morning rush.

John - thanks for the link.

Marko82 - I would get on Streets Run from the baldwin side, so I am entering by that bar where they park the old ice cream trucks. Good to hear that the Hays side hasn't given you problems. I would hit it around 6am, but its the 4pm return I worry about.

That section of Streets Run isn't too bad in the mornings, all things considered. You just have to be careful at what I'd call the "pinch points" where the road narrows.

I wouldn't worry too much about the traffic at 4 p.m., but I would speed up a little at the two blind right-hand turns around the city border. It's the late-evening bar crowd heading home, and folks who treat that road as a public grand prix course late at night, that deter me from riding it late in the evening.

the 4pm return would be something I would worry about too but I still get a bit nervous in busy traffic situations. I only come through there a couple times a week (in my car)near that hour. Some days are better than others but at that hour the outbound direction is sometimes backed up from the 3 way stop at Delwar with the brake lights snaking up to a few track crossings. I have seen some aggressive driving where Prospect intersects because the folks with the stop sign hurry out into small gaps while the people on streets run just CAN'T let someone beat them across the intersection or to the line of stopped traffic going up the hill. This is not an everyday thing, but just something to consider at that intersection as a potential danger.

I have been rear-ended while sitting in that traffic a few years back. I was stopped in a line of traffic in an ORANGE car.

If filtering past a line of stopped or crawling traffic is your thing it may be especially dangerous or unrealistic given the narrow/absent shoulder, short sight lines, and intersections

kelw - all of what you mention worries me as well. That three way intersection is a mess.

Maybe someday I will work up the nerve to try it, but I think I am going to stick to my bike path option for now.
