South Side so-called short cut is closed.

Maybe there is already a thread? Sorry I couldn't find it. I was riding down there today and noticed a fence closing the much safer way to go in that area to get to the south side trail from Station Square. I saw a woman and two really little kids riding with her on that crazy road they have us going on now with all those entrances to businesses with trucks coming and going. What a bunch of f'n a-holes to do what they did. We could easily ride along a safe route along there and now it is SUPER dangerous. There are like 6 signs warning us to be careful of trucks entering road. What a contrast to the super easy so-called short cut. Sure is laughable stuff. I felt bad for that mother an her kids, but they survived the moronic journey. Oh well. The people that were walking on the sidewalk were pissed off. Can't blame them. They took away a safe passage and made it a cluster fucx.

Thanks. "Temporary" is used and a 10' wide trail will be created? Am I reading that right? There will be an actual trail through there without dealing with that wild road with all those blind exits? Sorry if it is spelled out clearly, but sometimes I am in disbelief. The fence didn't look all the temporary, but I didn't look that close. The only person I talked with was under the impression that it was going to stay that way. I guess if it does, it is still better than if they put up a fence on Panther Hollow. I suspect they will at some point. Why have a connection in a park don't you know.

That's not quite how I read it. It says the 10' opening in a fence will permit people to continue west from 2nd Street. I think this means that the fence will temporarily block the illegal "shortcut" some trail users take, but it won't block the official trail route, which runs on streets in that section (or on sidewalks, if you want to walk it instead because of the truck traffic).

@Steven That's how I interpreted it also.

I added this comment on that bikepgh notice: Ngani: maybe you could tell the people who set up the detour (CSX or Frank Bryan Inc?) that the loose gravel they put down in the past week where S 2nd St meets the trail is awful for cyclists. Our tires plow right into it. That kind of gravel might work for trucks but it’s no good for bicycles. Please tell them, for next time. Also, if this gravel is going to be part of the trail for more than a month, I suggest that’s too long, and the gravel should be replaced by or covered with crushed limestone or asphalt. Even dirt would be better. Thanks.

The new grade crossing of the CSX tracks for the Frank Bryan Inc concrete plant, near the Liberty Bridge, looks like this:

I rode through there this weekend. It would really help, using the "official" route, if: 1. Somebody put an asphalt track down Terminal Way (or fixed the Belgian block). The road there is practically unusable by bikes. 2. Replaced the pea-sized gravel at the 2nd St entrance to the trail with something better for bikes, or mixed something in (limestone?) to the gravel to make it pack down. I don't mind the extra distance, but there's no reason for the road surface to be this bad.

They should have tamped down that gravel, at the very least.

Yeah, I just rode through there. Pretty bad, but that is what one would expect in that little spot. Most everything is bad in that tiny little area.
