STOLEN BIKE EDGEWOOD/WILKENSBURG

Hey everybody,

This past week I had my Brown Novara Randonee (Touring Bike) stolen from the back of my car in my driveway in Edgewood. I went driving arround the neighborhood and spotted a group in Wilkensburg with my Bike but I couldn't get any assitance from the local police; which is ironic because just a few weeks ago I recieved an award from Cheif Harper, City of Pittsburgh Police and the Mayor for helping them give away 400+ bikes to inner-city youths.

Pete; Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Unless you actually SEE someone take your bike (as opposed to seeing them ON your bike a couple of minutes later), police seem incapable of doing anything.

Good luck in getting it back.

And keep up the good work on the free bike program.

Just a question, did you have the bike locked to your rack on your car? (I am assuming it was on a rack please correct me if that is not the case)

I have been pretty paranoid since I had a bike stolen a few years ago and try to always lock the bike the my trunk rack if I am leaving the bike on my car.

Also, I would think even if the police couldnt do anything to prosecute the person on your bike, they would at least help you recover it since you probably have the paperwork for it still.

Of course they can arrest someone for posession of stolen property. And they would if it was an automobile, instead of a "toy" bike.

More proof that the police around here are useless.

My faith in humanity was restored and I was reunited with a lost friend. I GOT MY BIKE BACK LAST NIGHT!!! A guy called REI last night saying that a kid sold him my bike for $20 and he figured it was stolen so he was calling to inquire if anybody had reported it (Police blew him off evidently). I got the news, called him back and he hand delivered it within the hour. And if this wasn't enough he refused to accept an award or even the $20 he paid out of his pocket.

Thats awesome. I feel so conflicted about stuff like this. I would gladly pay 20bux to reunite someone with their bike, but at the same time, I feel like I'm encouraging the behavior that got it stolen in the first place.

Good news to hear tho.

Pretty crazy the dude wouldn't even take the $20 he paid for it.

Glad you got it back Peter.

This all helps to confirm my overwhelming personal experience that bike people are good people. Granted, most people are good people. It's just that bike people seem to outshine and stick together.
