Sounds like the thief even had a wrench? It's always seemed having a bolt-on wheel was enough to keep away the relatively-tame Pittsburgh thieves.
I should start carrying a cable again then.

Stolen Bike Wheels
This is likely a shot in the dark, but it's worth a try. My friend's bike wheels were ripped off last night between 11:30 pm and 2:00 am on Butler Street in the area of Belevedere's, Thunderbird, and Crazy Mocha. The rims are silver and the rear is fixed with a red tire. I know it's dead on a Sunday night but maybe someone noticed something.
