STOLEN: MONGOOSE TACTIC 26" rims

Hi,

I woke up this morning getting ready to head to class when i found out my bike was stolen. It was locked on my front porch in South Oakland.

Just like this

It is a yellow mongoose tactic.

The frame is pretty scratched up.

left handlebar side grip is missing but right one is still intact.

There is a large bald spot on the rear tire.

Front suspension cover is missing.

The seat has a slight rip.

Also there was a white sticker with black letters on the frame. Can't remember what the letters are.

This pisses me off because it was locked on my porch and i just bought it off of someone less than 2 weeks ago! Any help would be appreciated! Thank You!

sorry to hear about your loss, best of luck finding it (this is a great place to look!). Don't forget to file a report with the police to help you get it back, they sometimes have luck too.

Everyone here will ask, how was it locked up? Cable? Chain? U-lock? Combo?

Overnight outdoor lock ups are the ones that tend to go missing the most. Bummer.

Hopefully it will be found.

I locked it up with a Masterlock cable.

hope you find it or are able to replace it quickly. when you do, take the bike inside at night. its better to lose a little space in the apartment than to lose your ride. also, get a u bar lock, cable locks are only good for locking the wheels in combination with a u bar locking the frame.

brad, you should hand out the how to use a bike lock article you wrote every year in oakland and southside. maybe do a welcome to college special edition of urban velo as a promo each year. then its a deductible advertising expense!

How to use your lock properly:

http://www.urbanvelo.org/issue1/UrbanCyclist_Issue1_p58-59.html

Key quote:

"Proper Cable Lock Technique – There is no proper technique of using a cable as a primary lock in any big city. Most can be cut with hardware store bolt-cutters with cheater bars, well within reach of common thieves. Used as a secondary lock, or to secure wheels, a decent cable can be handy."

From Issue #1, I can't believe I wrote it over three years ago.

Once I'm not drowning in podcamp, my 'lock it right' flyer plan goes back into affect. Too many stolen bikes.
