Summer Solistice!

The summer solstice ! It happens on June 21 at 1:04 am There is a full moon on June 23 at 7:33 AM. Between those two events is a Saturday. June 22. I figured that Saturday, I could go out on my bike and find some nice camping place, cook food play guitar sing songs, imbibe intoxicants, make a fire, camp. And invite all my friends and acquaintances - the whole flock of them. If one were to take a group of campers that might get lound and rowdy and to them to a [ahem] restful campground at some pleasant distance from town -say, perhaps, maybe roughly about 22.91 (or so) miles up the GAP from the Hot Metal Bridge, (Not putting too fine a point of it on a public forum or anything) could there be any problems with that? Would any of you wanna come and help celebrate summer? If you think it's a bad idea, maybe you can help me avoid riding my bike out in that direction with a trailer full of food, camping equipment and musical instruments. These things sometimes happen by accident , you know.

Top Has any one ever parked at Bueno Vista? I want to invite some car folks. It's still almost a 2 mile walk in each direction, but some might be into that.

Hmm. Do you expect us to dance around naked in the moonlight? Sing? Trust me, that is a bad idea, on so many levels... Such occasions maybe tend to attract Wiccans, Satanists and god-knows who and what else. Aren't you worried? Do you want us to bring video cameras to shoot an original cyclist-themed horror movie? (You know, like that Blair Witch something-or-other movie?) On a more practical side, do you expect people to pack in their own stuff or will it be possible to throw junk into your trailer. Where did you scrounge the trailer, anyway?

I own a B.O.B. trailer, but I'm likely to have it filled with my own stuff anyhow. Wiccans, satanists, buddhists, communists, libertarians, pastafarians, rastafarians, small furry creatures from alpha centauri, whatever. All are welcome. Of course, I'm worried. It's the 21st century. Everyone with any sense is worried. As far as dancing (naked or not) in the moonlight, that is between the individual, their lawyer, responsible family members (if they exist), and the government. Wave to the nice satellite!

I plan on attending, have a two-kid trailer, and can help move others "stuff" if properly bribed with malty/hoppy beverages.

You don't need to camp overnight to come to the celebration. Come. Party. Ride 20+ miles home.

Is the trail open after dark? We want to come...but will have two needy dogs at home. I'm thinking about riding home instead of camping, OR driving and bringing the dogs along. The latter option seems kind of lame, though.

Technically, no. In practice, yes. How about you ride there and Ray drives and brings dogs. Then Ray rides home and you drive the dogs back? I should work at the UN....

Ok, I just talked with Mick (3:15pm). He's leaving his house in Oakland at 11am Saturday. I plan on rendezvousing with him down near Sandcastle a short time later. I’m bringing a trailer with an empty full sized cooler for everyone’s use and a soft sided cooler for beverages.. Mick said we will make a grocery store stop in McKeesport on the way.

I'm routing via the south end of the Montour Trail, figured I'd see how the transitions work on a bike with panniers. So I'll be riding Cecil-SouthPark-Large-Clairton-McKeesport and then via the GAP proper. Ray and Joanne, I hope you can make it. Bring the dogs!

Ahlir- Did you go out there and get back by the time you posted this? I'm guessing it was probably about 5 when we got out there. Maybe you took Dead Man's Hollow and we went up the McKeesport side?

Yeah, I did come back the Dead Man way... I unfortunately think of the McK side as something with ATVs and barking dogs; should try it again.

It was great to see all of you! Ahlir, sorry we missed you--always nice to meet people from the boards!

@Ahlir, you're right about the Mckeesport side, but along with junkyard dogs, urban housing projects and your local pharmaceutical sales representative, they also have a grocery store. Those of us that were riding together came back by dead man's hollow.

There's gonna be another solstice, soon! Saturday, June 21st. Anyone up for camping? Same place? Thinking of two departures - a slow riding one, then a hour or so later a fast riding one.
