I usually try do the same thing; Unfortunately today however, after a guy honked at me to get into the shoulder on 885, where the shoulder turns into a turn lane, and then at the bottom of a hill he angrily pointed again to the shoulder, I gave him the finger

1) Riding two abreast is, indeed, lawful. 2) We all have issues. Sometimes these get expressed in dramatic ways. 3) On occasion (say, the car next to me went through a red light or cut me off on a right-turn), I will gently rap on the passenger window and make what I believe is a helpful and considerate comment. The rap on the window always seems to freak people out. Has anyone found a better way to get a driver's attention? I should note that drivers have always been apologetic about their behavior; it's the sudden intrusion that's the problem. Addenda: a) "I was busy talking [to my passenger]" b) "I just didn't see you" [this last one was actually at the driver's window. Amazingly, in urban environments, you mostly can catch up with cars at the next light. How can that be? Cars are so much faster.]

I would never touch someone's car unless I wanted a fight. Some people consider getting a drop of water on their car a form of aggression, never mind your fithy oily disgusting cyclist fingers. Otherwise, I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.. usually without success.

I gave someone an earful for throwing garbage out of their car (not at me). I later thought better of it as you never know who is going to try and bash your head in or shoot you. I would imagine that the chances of this are greater when dealing with the road-ragin' garbage throwin' masses of human detritus.

I've had a few good talks with drivers. Well, two, at least. I find it's best to limit myself to the law and things that are clearly unsafe. If it degenerates into shouting, I'll just keep repeating "YOU shouldn't be on the road." Drivers in road rage kinda know that anyhow.
