The Flood.

Any reason to worry about water potability?

I have got really sick a few times that I suspect were caused by ingesting some road spray. I worry about backed up sewers more than the water from my kitchen sink.

Vaguely related tangent--during rainy springs in Europe, many PRO racers succumb to stomach illness thanks to the manure and other stuff that gets washed onto the roads where they race.

I don't think so

You live in HP right? I wonder if the water that http://www.pgh2o.com/ is pumping out the Allegheny right now isn't cleaner than usual since there's more volume of snow melt etc. But that's just a theory. I was here during the flooding in 1996 and also the Hurrican Hugo flooding and never had an issue with the drinking water. Now, if you plan to swim in the river? Different story.

I have a camera today, going to stroll over toward the Mon Wharf at lunch to see how the new trail is fairing. It looked super-mud encrusted yesterday from the last flood.

I would less worry about local roads and more about the occasionally submerged river trail, bringing stuff downstream from farm country. I wouldn't think there's any more dog poo along streets in March than there is in July.

Just checked, the river levels are expected to hit 27.4 feet on Sunday, enough to flood the Parkway Central. That's gotta be high enough to cover some of the riverfront.

I don't think the pumping/filtering stations are in any danger.

WHoo, hoo! Is the next party a mud-shovelling party? Tetanus, anyone?

I fear the stuff that oozes out of the hillsides, eg along 2d avenue or bigelow blvd, not dog poo.

If the PWSA loses 20% of the *treated* water due to water main breaks...

12:45 p.m. Friday March 12 on the Mon Wharf--no flood. Yet.

My husband and I were wondering about the new trail there by the wharf parking. That area floods constantly. Did they build a flood-proof trail such that it won't be destroyed every time the water rises?

I think there were some issues the last time the water came up onto the trail, but it was mainly mulch and stuff that had washed all over the trails.

When they were discussing the design of the wharf trail area they said that they had designed it specifically to limit damage to the trail and the greenery they were going to install there. Not sure exactly what they did as I haven't been down there in ages, but I know thats what their intention was.

The last time it flooded, the news interviewed a city worker who was griping that since the trail work it now took a lot longer to clear the mud away. Figures, waa-waa. Homer Simpson - "change is bad".

From a PA-DCNR news release, March 2009:

"The park will flood several times a year with a maximum down-time of five days each, so the design is graded for easy wash off."

From the Post-Gazette, January 2010:

"Mr. Kaczorowski said cleanup will be more difficult in any type of weather. Instead of hosing off a flat lot, crews will have to clean behind the barriers."

Best laid plans....

This sounds like the sort of situation that quickly creates ill will toward any bike or pedestrian infrastructure improvements.

those parked cars are in the way of our mud!

The corporate version of "I just spent hours clearing my driveway to get my car out, so I don't wanna shovel my sidewalk so people can walk past".

Tell me about it. I currently am dealing with a broken tailbone thanks to my neighbors ice pool of a sidewalk. :(

Makes cycling + potholes extra fun!
