I think she is the same girl who rides across the Fort-Pitt Bridge and takes the exit to Carson St.

I bike across that bridge to Bigelow fairly often. Crossing the bridge isn't that difficult, though it's slightly uphill. The problem is at the end, where I'm turning left to go to Oakland or the East End. I wait for traffic to clear, take the lane, and wait out the light.

We've also taken it on a pool ride before too right?

Maybe it's a real live BatGirl, but instead of an awesome purple motorcycle, she rides a bicycle. Hollywood says we live in Gotham, after all...

I'll also occasionally ride up the bridge, then make the left to get to Oakland. More often I ride down it to Lawrenceville...

Theoretically, it's only 25 along there. (Pgh cops, ywanna set up a radar gun sometime and get some revenue?)

Interestingly, according to Streetview it's 25 inbound (sign visible about halfway between Finland and Herron) but 35 outbound (sign visible just past Herron) decreasing to 25 somewhere in the middle (sign visible just before Harding).

Does this city not believe in 'Reduced Speed Limit Ahead' signs? I mean, not that this area seems to believe in obeying or enforcing speed limits anyway, but I don't think I've seen warnings of changing limits on Penn either, or even on the Parkway for that matter.

buffalo2, there are likely rules governing when/where "reduced speed limit ahead" signs can be placed, they may preclude placement most places in the city. Or the city just doesn't bother. There are weird state laws about stuff like that...

Stu, you know better than to suggest that a local LEO is permitted to use a radar gun. Only Staties get the good toys.

inbound is a good shortcut to downtown. its really fast, but scary as hell. i used to use it on occasions when i was holding a rush package for downtown in bloomfield and knew i wasnt going to be able to pick up anything in the strip anyway.

I remember riding inbound on Bigelow Boulevard with a Critical Mass in 2009 or 2010, and it was great. Especially with the long downhill descent into downtown, we were probably approaching 35 mph at some points. But to go as a single cyclists would be pretty intimidating.

I think its 25 between Oakland and the bridge, then 35, in either direction. "Reduced speed ahead" signs are only required if the drop is more than 10mph.

Alas, the speed limits are pure fantasy and the few times I've biked it I have felt insane. Less so when in a group, but.

It's a stretch of road that I would love to ride if it was just a little bike friendly. But cars reaching speeds of 65mph ends the dream.

I live in Polish Hill, and Bigelow is such a ridiculous road. Average speed is probably around 55.. 100% because there is no space for cops to sit. I wish we could get a cop to sit in that park along the road every once in a while to slow the speed down.

I agree that would be a great road if 25 or 35 even was actually enforced. Ill ride Bloomfield bridge here and there, but usually do take Gold/Baum. I saw two folks biking Bigelow today onto Bloomfield Bridge. Too scary for my taste, very brave (or stupid) souls.

Here's how we solve the only-state-cops-can-use-radar problem: Work together. Put one state cop with a radar gun on the side of the road, doesn't really need a vehicle, a tripod and a chair will do. Alongside this, put a team of motorcycle city cops to do the pulling over.

There are plenty of non-radar methods of tracking speed.

I think if they installed speed humps with a series of graduated lines after, at 5 foot intervals, then measure where the car touches back down, it would be easy to calculate the speed.

State cops are out of their jurisdiction there. I talked to one a little while ago - they stick to certain roads and aren't allowed off them when on-duty (I was trying to give a statement, and find a place/time to meet one in person was tricky other than the station in Greensburgh)

But Nick is right. There just needs to be a political will to make it happen, like Penn Ave.

I ride this stretch fairly regularly, it's really not that scary if you're visible. I ride the section through the park on the park road. On that note I run into cops in that park from time to time... they are there fairly often if I see them twice a month.

Riding across the bridge and into polish hill is a fairly safe route, there are also some houses up there on bigelow, maybe she is just going home.
