Two separate car on bike accidents last night

Just heard on the news that there were two accidents last night (Saturday night) that send local cyclists to the hospital. One near the intersection of Pius and 18th on the South Side, and one in the 3400 block of Brighton Road.

The Southside location gets a lot of bike traffic. Not so, the northside location.

Posted edited to add some additional detail:

Southside accident is reported to have happened about 11:30. It sounds like the North Side accident happened a little later.

Hope whoever the victims are, they are ok.

Anyone have any more information?

EDIT: This is definitely a reminder that while BikeFest might be in full-swing right now, one needs to be careful out there.

Plus, if you are riding your bike at night --always make sure to have lights & blinkies on!

I was the one hit on 18th...trying to get a lawyer but the cops are telling me there isn't a report because I didn't go to the hospital right away and a motor vehicle toed away. My bike was put in the cop car and they dropped me back off at home... cop on on the phone said a broken bicycle isn't the same as a broken car. I went to the hospital a few hours later to find out I have fractures in me wrist and ankle. I have no way to get in touch with the guy that hit me...

Tell them it's not merely a broken bike, it's a broken wrist and ankle, which should be a little more important than broken car. Insist that they generate a report. Document who you talk to and what they say. Check with supervisors and find out if it really is the law that a report isn't generated unless someone goes to the hospital.

Ok will do, thanks. This is another thing in life that school doesn't teach you what to do.

3D Mark, if the motor vehicle was towed then there is a record of it somewhere. Your injuries and broken bike are exactly the same and if you find the driver and get their insurance it should all get taken care of.

Also, don't post any specifics of the accident either on here or facebook, etc. until you talk to a lawyer. Statements can be used against you, etc.

I hope you heal quickly. Good luck.

Go to the station and tell them you want to file a report. Ask to speak to the officer on the scene if you have to. There is some question as to what constitutes a "tow" for a bike, but having them load an unusable bike into their car to carry it to your home might qualify. In any case, you were injured by a motor vehicle while (presumably) operating your vehicle in accordance with PA law. That doesn't make you any less injured or any less in need of information on the other driver, etc.

A police report should be generated in the event of a tow or injury. i think you qualify.

Please read our In a Crash section. there's lots of useful info.

also, a lawyer schooled in bike stuff advertises on the front of this site.

Call the station and ask for the CCR Number (if they didn't already give you one). One is generated anytime an officer is dispatched. You can then ask for a copy of the report which should have the guy's info on it.
