Volunteers needed Aug. 23 in Duquesne – trail maintenance

Volunteers are needed for trail maintenance on Sunday, August 23. Could you come out and help? The principal goal is to cut back shrubs that are encroaching along the sides of the Steel Valley Trail, narrowing the bikeable lane. Previously we trimmed near Kennywood. This time we’ll work further down the trail in Duquesne. WHERE: You can park a car in Duquesne very close to the work area. Drive to Route 837 and Grant Ave in Duquesne, cross the RR tracks into the RIDC park, then turn right on S Linden Ave, drive 400 feet, turn right again at green ARC sign, drive to end of this spur. If biking, bike the trail between Duquesne and the Riverton Bridge and you’ll see us. See the map! https://goo.gl/ME0ay1 WHEN: Sunday Aug. 23, 8am - 11am BRING: pruners, gloves, water bottle, and perhaps bike & bike lock. Optional: shade hat, sunscreen, rake, hedge trimmer. Kids welcome. Note: there is some poison ivy along the trail. -Paul Steel Valley Trail Council

The hamantaschen (poppyseed) and rugelach (apricot) for tomorrow have been ordered, from Allegro Hearth Bakery.

*sigh* I'll be at Try-a-Bike in the morning. I will try to nab some knotweed along some trail in cowchip's memory.

I'm planning to do this maintenance in the morning (8-11) then head over to Try-a-Bike later, because that runs until 3pm.

Turnout was small for Sunday's Steel Valley Trail maintenance, but George Schmidt, Bob Holder, Greg Ashman and I got a lot done in Duquesne, nevertheless. We cut back shrubs between Grant Ave and the Duquesne tunnel, and between the Port Perry bridge and Kennywood. There were lots of cyclists on the trail. Lots of people yelled out "Thank You", but nobody stopped to help, unfortunately. Maybe I should have mentioned that we had cookies.

No one is going to assume that help is either desired or needed... maybe make a sign "always looking for more volunteers." Perhaps "Stop (sign), pick a weed, carry on."
