Volunteers Needed for 2 hour bike counts

April 22nd is the last day of classes at Pitt. We'd like to find a handful of volunteers who are willing to do a two hour count of bicycles at an Oakland or East End location before the students all disperse.

Bike counts are done in the morning and evening "rush hours" which generally run from 7:00 am to 9:00 am (or 7:30 to 9:30) and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

This is not a difficult task and consists of noting the number, gender (if available) and helmet utilization (yes/no) of cyclists passing your designated location during the two hour period. SPC will provide basic instructions and a sheet for recording data.

A dozen or so folks from this board volunteered last year, providing valuable information to the City and the region regarding bike utilization. It will be interesting to see how the numbers might have changed with the increase in the cost of gasoline.

While I am currently seeking people who can count bicycles in the Oakland/East End area in order to to capture the student populations at PITT and CMU, we will also be seeking volunteers for other locations later in the summer, when the weather is consistently more bike friendly.

If you have a couple hours to spare in the few weeks and are willing to help out, please let me know by posting here, or PM me.

Thanks!

Depends on how many volunteers we get....we've got two or three other locations we need to be sure are covered before we get to that one.

While I'm not working, I can probably locate myself just about anywhere and do the count like I did a few months ago. PM me & we can negotiate where & when.

It's possible, depending on the day.

You pick the day -- any weekday between now and April 22nd. Would it help if I posted a list of the priority locations?

while they were redoing the West End Circle i rode past folks in the midst of a manual traffic census on several occasions. felt pretty good to see them take note.

In case the PMs are still wonky, I live in the East End and would be more than happy to help with this.
