warning: non bike question

does anyone know a dentist who will remove my wisdom teeth for free? i'm kind of in a desperate way. i don't have insurance or the kind of money for an out of pocket procedure.

i'm sure it's unlikely but thought i'd ask. maybe if i can get them out of my head i'll be less crotchety.

Pitt's dental school is about as close as I think you are likely to get, but it won't be free.

FYI, my oral surgeon was charging $61 per tooth for a simple extraction in 2006, or $106 if a surgical extraction was needed (my wisdom tooth extraction didn't require one). These are prices without insurance involvement. I was surprised how cheap it was, compared to the price of most other medical stuff when you don't have insurance. I don't know if most oral surgeons offer discounts or payment plans.

@steven did that include local anesthesia?

Yes. I paid a total of $106 for extracting two wisdom teeth, not counting $25 for an office visit a few weeks prior to discuss the procedure. (I guess the second tooth must have been $45 not $61.) The whole thing was pretty much painless.

I am curious what percentage of wisdom teeth are extracted "simply". how badly were yours impacted?

Not at all. I just had a cavity in a wisdom tooth. My dentist said an extraction would be better than trying to fill it. (They did two teeth because extracting in pairs prevents misalignment as the remaining teeth shift in response.)
