week bike rental/visitor

Does anybody here know of a place that does weekly bike rentals at an affordable rate? My dad will visit Sept. 28-Oct.4, and I want to get a bike for the whole week, for him. (Comfort bike with good hill gears, upright position, and mountain bike tires.) Googled, and I found rates listed per day only, at local places. Reasonable rates for one day! But at $30/day for a week, that's $210... more than craigslist used bike prices. Idea of shopping for a bike, then the hassle of selling it, isn't appealing. So I'm hoping someone here has advice...

You may want to give some of the local rental places a call, your timeframe is a bit late in the season and if they are still operating, ask about a discounted rate for the extended rental. They may be willing to work a deal.

I see the idea of short-term purchase isn't ideal, but Golden Triangle Bike Rental is having a sale of used bikes on Sept, 15th. The city cruiser / commuters are listing for $169.00-$189.00, which is cheaper than renting.

Instant Plan B. Buy for cheaper than rental, use as needed, then dontate to Free Ride.

Pops gets some wheels, FR gets a healthy donation, and you get oodles of good karma. :)

If you have the space, it's also a good idea to have a backup bike in case

A) The Plan A bike has to go in for repairs

B) You just don't have time to deal with that flat you got on the way home last night

C) Some other friend or relative comes to visit

D) Loaner for friend or neighbor you trust

E) Rule #12

+1 on Stu's reasons to have an extra bike. But it helps if your prospective visitor/friend/neighbor is around your height.

Hello LoriF, I have a basement bike that your Dad is welcome to use. Trek830, a mountain bike reconfigured as a commuter/tourer. Tires are 26x1.5. It's still got the stock gear-shifters, which are called rapid-fire thumb shifters I think.

Two non-standard things on this bike. The gears are extra-low for climbing hills with a load (I'm the load). The seat is an Easy-Seat.

Send me a PM via the message board if you'd like to use it. Cheers, V.
