Why is Morewood So Bike-Unfriendly?

Is it just me, or is Morewood betwixt Ellsworth and Forbes rather bike unfriendly? Going back and forth to Schenley today, I saw probably a dozen other cyclists. The road is narrow, and traffic seems to speed a bit between Fifth and Ellsworth.

Huh, it always seems so heavily travelled that I don't think cars really get a chance to speed that much. I just take the lane. People wait. It hardly makes any difference when there's a car stopped at the next intersection one block up.

The road surface is one of the worst parts about that section of road. The potholes and the sunken sewer covers are bad enough on a suspension and awful for trying to control a bike in a heavy-traffic area. Also, I think the intersection of Fifth and Morewood really pisses drivers off, esp. during rush hour, making things worse as people try to beat the light or do the Pittsburgh Left.

yeah, i wish i could just tell everyone to "take the lane," but unfortunately, many people, especially some of the college kids don't feel all that comfortable doing that

Eh, if I were making a list of bad roads I ride (or never ride because it's a death wish), I wouldn't even think of this one.

but you feel like it should be a nice stroll

Yeah, I agree, there are far, far, far worse roads in the city, but....considering the amount of bike traffic it gets, it could be much better.
