================================

Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen is having a "rally syle" event with painted 45 and 70 mile routes on Sunday 5 July, thanks to member Bob Spatafore. Please come out and support the club. Open to all. Please forward this email to all your cycling friends.

KOAL Ride - 70 and 45-50 mile Event

When: Sun, July 5, 8:30am

Where Skating Rink Upper Lot in North Park, Pearce Mill Road-Next to Olympia Grove [Same location as Fall Rally and Spring Kick-Off]

Description: Rally Style Event. UPDATE 6.21.09 Route is Painted! Due to road closings the route is now 70 miles. Contact Bob Spatafore rspatafore1@verizon.net. Route goes in the vicinity of Saxonburg, Butler, Renfrew, Connoquenessing, Zelienople and other hard to spell towns in Butler County. Features include painted route, free hills and cue sheets. You can ride at your own pace or join one of at least 2 groups being led by Fred Klehm and Bob Spatafore. 70 miles too much? A 45-50ish route-cue sheet is also available. Guaranteed to be more fun than Hanlin Station Road repeats. 3 rest stops with rest rooms on the route.

Assuming that July 4th festivities do not get out of hand, I will be up for this. I'm glad to see more rides taking place in Butler county.

I'm curious...how exactly did you go about painting the route?

a little plug for these: http://routearrows.com.

Oh, and for those considering riding the 15 miles to North Park and back, my preferred route is Sharpsburg/Mt Royal Blvd/Ferguson/Duncan/Babcock, left just over the bridge at the park onto (I think) Pearce Mill Rd, and Olympia Grove is about 3/4 (?) mile ahead on the right.

Mt Royal doesn't always have great sight lines, which makes me a little nervous. The alternative, Route 8, is ugly, but the lights are timed for 40 mph so the traffic speeds aren't completely insane.

One alternative to at least the first part of Mt. Royal is to take Little Pine Creek Road to Wetzel, then across Vollmer. At the church, you can go right at hit Mt. Royal just before the cemetery. This removes much of the business district along Mt Royal, and Little Pine Creek is just a nice road.

or you can just go up babcock to thompson run out of millvale.

+HV.

More detail: From Millvale: Babcock, R Thompson Run to end, L Duncan, R Babcock, pass the lake, L Pearce Mill, then about a mile or two to the rink.

Babcock to Thompson Run works great.

Fun variations through West View include Babcock-->L on Rochester-->R on 19/Perrysville-->R on Ingomar into North Park, or California/Lincoln into Bellevue-->R on Balph-->L on Center across 279 into West View, then pick up Perrysville-Ingomar. Perrysville can get trafficky during the week and later in the weekend, so these alternatives are better on a Sunday AM.

No guarantees, but since I'm only 4-5 miles from the start, this might be a fun way to spend a Sunday.
