RIDE THE ROCKIES

Bike Pittsburgh will be sharing experiences of Local and National cyclists and advocates in this coming year as a semi-regular feature of The Bike Pittsburgh Leader. You can find these interviews in the Community & Classifieds section of the Bike Pittsburgh website. Here is an excerpt from our first interview:

Bike Pittsburgh Member Mike Smith has participated in seven Ride The Rockies bike tours. We got him to get off his trainer long enough to talk about what it’s like to spend a week riding up and down Colorado mountains.

Bike Pittsburgh: So what is “Ride The Rockies”?

Mike Smith: It’s an annual weeklong bike ride through Colorado. Each year 2,000 riders from all over the country, plus a healthy contingent of foreign riders, spend the week seeing the beauty of the state at its glorious best – mid-June when the wild flowers blanket fields, streams and rivers are foaming with snowmelt waters and mountaintops are still frosted in white.

BP: You should apply for a job with the Pennsylvania Tourist Board – they would love to have somebody wax poetic about our fair Commonwealth like that! Riding a bike over a mountain takes more than poetry for motivation.

MS: True, but almost anyone who rides a bike can do Ride The Rockies. My first Ride The Rockies was shortly after I had moved to Colorado from Virginia Beach. Talk about going from flatlands to mountains! But I did it. Matter-of-fact, less than a hour after we started that first day we had a 20-mile climb up Grand Mesa outside of Grand Junction. To be sure you have to train, but the Ride The Rockies organizers have created a great training program on their Web site (www.ridetherockies.com). It takes you from virtually no riding to being in top shape for the ride.

You can find the full interview in the Community & Classifieds section of the Bike Pittsburgh website.
