ROUTE 28 IMPROVEMENTS – PLEASE COMMENT BY MARCH 8TH!

As you may have heard from our Action Alert, recently there was a series of PennDOT public meetings to exhibit Alternative 7, the latest engineering designs for Rt. 28. If any of you have ever driven on Rt. 28, you know what a problem traffic can be on this highway. The plans, for the most part, seem very solid and address many of the congestion problems occurring presently. However as bicyclists and walkers, we have two concerns. 1) That the current plans, which call for the moving of the train tracks along Rt. 28, could possibly eliminate the future extension of the North Side trail from 31st Street to 40th Street. 2) That the transition into Millvale from the proposed 5′ sidewalk from the 40th Street Bridge along East Ohio Street may not be adequately safe for bicyclists and pedestrians.

If you have any thoughts or comments on this please go to http://www.bike-pgh.org, download the Rt. 28 Comment Forms and submit your comments by March 8th. It’s still early enough in the design process to get our concerns addressed. There’s no reason why this beneficial congestion mitigation project cannot provide great bicycle and pedestrian access.

SPARE PARTS

Biscotti By Bike: Local cyclist Nick Thompson is setting up a Sunday morning service bringing Enrico’s biscotti from their Strip District bakery to the new coffee shop on Reynolds Street. The plan is to get a nice aluminum trailer from BikeBox in Canada for the purpose (which we would leave for use by Bike PGH! members the other days of the week.) Nick is looking for interested riders. Contact Nick at: (Nick@Ipropel.org).

Free Ride is moving … soon. The Free Ride Recycle-A-Bike will be moving to another part of the same building in the near future. We will be needing volunteers to re-build the shop in the new location. The dates are not set as this email goes out, but please keep your eyes and ears tuned if you are interested in volunteering as the details still have to be worked out. For more information email: (freeride@bike-pgh.org).

Meet A District Three Candidate: On Tuesday, February 28th, you can meet District 3 Candidate Bill Kraus and find out if he supports bicycling improvements for his District and our city.
