A one-day Internet fund drive that pumps sorely needed cash to local charities attracted far more donations than last year’s campaign, and many nonprofit organizations say they’re relying more on social media to help raise money.

Scott Bricker, executive director of the Lawrenceville-based Bike Pittsburgh, said his group e-mailed 5,000 subscribers last week. It posted a blog on its website about the event and reminded 1,900 followers on Twitter and 2,600 fans on Facebook to give yesterday.

“We constantly use social media for just about everything we do,” he said.

For the day, 7,406 donors pledged $2.8 million through the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving, spokesman John Ellis said. This was easily more than twice last year’s total of $1.1 million, which came from 900 donors.

“We’re delighted by the way things are going,” Ellis said. “It’s exceeded our expectations.”

The Pittsburgh Foundation provided $500,000 to be matched proportionately to donations, depending on the total amount of gifts.
