Fresh Bike Lanes, sharrows on Dallas Ave, Hamilton Ave help link up East End network

The new bike lanes on Dallas Ave in Point Breeze make both cyclists and mailboxes smile

The City continued the expansion of the East End bike network this weekend with the addition of bike lanes on Dallas Ave and shared lane markings, or sharrows, on Hamilton Ave.  This adds to the recently installed markings on Highland Ave and Wilkins Ave that now connect six neighborhoods and three parks with clearly marked on-street bicycle infrastructure.

The Dallas Ave bike lanes (bicycle markings still need to be installed) go from the new bike lanes on Wilkins Ave in Squirrel Hill to the intersection of Penn Ave in Point Breeze.  Continuing north, Dallas becomes sharrows until the Hamilton Ave intersection,  meeting up with the new sharrows that will take you west to the East Liberty Blvd bike lanes.  The ELB bike lanes continue to Negley Ave, while intersecting with the new sharrows on Highland Ave that direct cyclists into Highland Park.

The City outfitted Hamilton Ave in Homewood with sharrows

This brings the total miles of newly installed bike lanes/sharrows in 2010 to five.  We look forward to working with Mayor Ravenstahl to install the next 20 miles of on-street bike markings by next year, in order to reach the 25 miles that were committed when the League of American Cyclists recognized the City as a Bronze Bike-Friendly Community back in May.

Don’t forget to drop a word of THANKS to the Mayor’s 311 response line, either by calling 311 or sending an email.  It’s important to let the City know that we are paying attention and appreciate the work that they do.
