Congressman Doyle Steps Up for Pedestrian & Bike Safety

Congressman Doyle goes 3 for 3 in supporting safe streets legislation in 2014!

DoyleIt’s mid-March, the Federal House of Representatives has only been in session for 8 weeks, and already a number of bills have been introduced that will improve traffic safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Fortunately, our Congressman Mike Doyle recognizes that protecting people while they walk or bike is an important issue.  Since the beginning of the year he has cosponsored 3 bills that will address the need for improved provisions & funding for bicycle & pedestrian safety projects:

H.R. 3978: New Opportunities for Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Financing Act of 2014

The purposes of this Act are as follows:

(1) To promote investment in bicycling and walking infrastructure to create and connect transportation networks.

(2) To improve access to employment, business districts, and transit in communities traditionally underserved by existing transportation systems by establishing additional opportunities for financing nonmotorized infrastructure projects.

(3) To attract new investment to business districts and neighborhoods in low-income communities.

(4) To leverage Federal funds and private investment in low-income communities and those traditionally underserved by existing transportation systems.

H.R. 3494: “The Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Act”

To amend title 23, United States Code, with respect to the establishment of [bicyclist & pedestrian] performance measures for the highway safety improvement program, and for other purposes.

H.R. 2468: The Safe Streets Act

To ensure the safety of all users of the transportation system, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, children, older individuals, and individuals with disabilities, as they travel on and across federally funded streets and highways.

These bills will only pass if they gain more support in the House.  If you have friends or family living outside our district, make sure they reach out to their congressional representatives to request their support of these 3 powerful bills.

It is so encouraging that Pittsburgh has a Congressman in office that is taking action to make our streets safer.  If you haven’t already thanked him, you can send him an email saying that you appriciate his support.

We look forward to working with Congressman Doyle to put an end to traffic violence and ensure that all road users can travel safely home.

They make it easy for elected officials to join on.” –Mayor Bill Peduto (Source: Streetsblog USA)[/ezcol_2third] [ezcol_1third_end]
