Bike light recipients leave with smiling faces

Last night 53 people rode away from our pop-up event much safer and happier than before. The October Bike Light Giveaway took place in the neighborhoods of Larimer and Oakland at the Kingsley Center and Scheneley Plaza.

15593035046_61bb4ff0c4_bEight volunteers–four at each location–assisted BikePGH staff members in flagging down lightless bicycle riders by displaying bright signs reading “Free Bike Lights”, ringing bike bells, and playing music on a jambox. Volunteers came equipped with screw drivers to install a front white light and rear red light on each person’s bicycle, and sent riders off with a Pittsburgh Bike Map and Urban Biking Companion to learn more about riding safely in Pittsburgh.

There were plenty of skeptics who didn’t believe the lights could possibly be free; but thanks to our Light Giveaway sponsor Performance Bike, and our concern for bike riders’ safety, we were able to make this free pop-up event happen. The Bike Light Giveaway brought lots of smiles to our streets!
