Missed the meeting? You can still voice your support of the East Ohio Street bike lanes on the comment form below.

“Do YOU support the addition of exclusive bike lanes on East Ohio Street?”

The Northside is getting a makeover. A full reconstruction of East Ohio Street, Madison Ave, East Street and several on and off ramps in the area will be included among other improvements. Earlier this week, PennDOT led a public presentation on the revised plans at the beautiful Priory Grand Hall.

I love a good public meeting and this was a great public meeting. Candy bowl? Check. Project plans on easels? Check. Business owners, residents (young and old)? Check. Slide presentation? Heck yeah. If you missed it, you’re in luck: Read through our meeting recap and you can still comment on the plans. We’ll send your feedback to PennDOT.

Bike and Pedestrian Improvements

  • Five foot bike lanes with a 2-2.5 foot painted buffer will be added on E Ohio Street from East Street to Chestnut Street
  • On-street markings and pedestrian signalization will be updated and the sidewalks will be widened. ADA curb ramps will be installed at seven different intersections.
  • Traffic will be moved further away from sidewalks.
  • Traffic lane widths will be reduced to slow traffic speeds.
  • This stretch of roadway will help make a safer connection from the Northside neighborhoods to the North Shore Trail, the 16th St Bridge, and on to the Strip District and Penn Avenue protected bike lane.
  • This major commitment from PennDOT will go a long way in making the 800 block of E Ohio Street safer and more appealing in order to support ongoing redevelopment efforts.

Other improvements
A curb will be installed at the intersection of Madison Ave and Concord St. This will prevent cars from cutting through the East Deutschtown neighborhood to get to I-279. Hooray for traffic calming!
