Broadway in Beechview just got a multimodal fund grant to build better transit stops and bike lanes!

We just heard the news out of Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak’s office: Better biking and walking is coming to Broadway Ave in Beechview. A sizable $600,000 in state funding has been awarded towards $1 million in improvements to transportation including updated T stop shelters, bike lanes, enhanced signal crossings, traffic calming measures such as speed tables, and creating compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Our congratulations and thanks to Councilwoman Rudiak and state Senator Fontana who worked as a team to secure the funding – Councilwoman Rudiak applied for the grant with the URA and the Senator advocated for its funding in Harrisburg.

“This is such fantastic news for Beechview,” Councilwoman Rudiak said in a statement. “The neighborhood is poised for renewal with young families buying homes and developers taking on major renovations. Now, our public infrastructure can be more accessible and attractive.”

The improvements to Broadway are intended to bring a slower, neighborhood-friendly traffic speeds to the street and to update its now antiquated infrastructure.

“This project will make that business corridor safer, more attractive and more accessible for pedestrian and bicycle travel,” PA Senator Fontana said in a statement. “I’m pleased to have played a role in obtaining this state support and will continue to seek state dollars to supplement good local projects.”

Construction is expected to begin next year.
