abandoned bike panther hollow

There has been an intact blue bike poorly locked to a sign on the river end of Panther Hollow for a while, but when I rode past yesterday it was missing the wheels and seat.

Is this bike now fair game?

This bike actually belongs to a friend of mine. I saw it there one day and called her up to ask, apparently the chain broke on the trail and she locked it up there. I've told her on numerous occasions that she should go get it...

It's really a shame, that frame is an old Vitus 979. A pretty cool old bike. It's been mistreated for a long time, though.

That bike belongs to my friend Maggie. She said her chain broke and so rather than wheeling her bike home to Oakland she locked it up.... Pretty stupid, right?

RickyTickyTac (Maggie's friend) was half-joking about stealing it the other day because she had left it there for so long and will likely never retrieve it.

The frame is kind of nice, but I believe one of the rear dropouts is messed up and would need to be fixed.

I guess I'll inform Maggie about the loss of her wheels and seat and see if she cares to get her frame and such before someone takes a saw to her lock.

Thanks for posting about this.

What's it been, three weeks I think?

Nice bike, too.

Hmmm- so does this mean I can take the brakes and derrailleur this evening and if she wants them, she can get in touch?

It has been there quite a while, and appeared to be a nice bike.

Even though it's sort of abandoned, I wouldn't suggest stealing from it. I just talked to her and she says she'll pick it up. I don't know how much truth is behind that.

It's not really a nice bike either. The frame WAS nice at one time until she broke the derailleur hanger off of it. Now the derailleur is attached really poorly with a replacable hanger just clamped on with the skewer. The brakes and derailleur aren't worth stealing, they're basically the cheapest ones you can possibly get.

Update: The owner just retrieved her bike. Upon learning that the wheels had been jacked, she decided it had been there long enough.

one might say "a bit too long" rather than "long enough"...

I saw this the other day and it looked really sad.

It's been there sans chain for at least two months (if I recall correctly). I understand it breaking, so locking it up until it's more convenient to retrieve it, but two months? From Oakland? Doesn't really sound like they were using it much, or that concerned about it. Hm.

Yeah. The owner of this bike is probably the most irresponsible person I have ever known.

I guess I gotta toss out the question, if so many of us know whose bike it is, I know I'd've at some point picked up the phone and said "Y'know, I fear for your bike, ywanna lend me your U-lock key and I'll pick it up for you?" And if she'd said "It's junk, never mind, but I'd at least like the lock back," well, fine.

But as we've discussed before, I think we do need to police our own. Junked bikes are no better than junked cars, just take up less space.

On the third hand, someone else pointed out how many abandoned bikes there are around Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Similar story, borderline bike, major failure, no parts worth recovering. So some of this is to be expected. But still...

I generally make it a practice to grab bikes put out with the trash when its convenient for me. Eventually I get them to free ride, although sometimes I do use parts or give them to someone else if they are in decent shape.

Who is collecting kids bikes for giving away other than getting them to Kraynick's?
