Best place to rent/borrow a bike case?

I am travelling by charter bus the weekend after next and am planning on bringing along my bike for a long ride while I am out in the central part of the state. I am a little hesitant just to toss my bike in the cargo hold of the bus unprotected. Any tips or tricks? Is a bike case worth getting for a short time, or am I better off skipping the ride all together?

You could ask a bike shop for a bike box. I would cut it down so that it fits with the wheels off. Tape the box up good. Save it for re-packing at your destination. You may want to get a bunch of cheap pipe insulation to wrap around the tubes to protect the frame. Pack in some towels as well to prevent other things from rubbing in transit. I suggest removing the handlebars, pedals, and rear derailleur. You may want spreaders or dowels between your fork blades (front fork and rear dropouts) to prevent your forks from being bent when there is no wheel in them.

Kind of along the same lines as traveling by plane: http://travellingtwo.com/resources/packingyourbike

Some people also like cheap hockey gear bags, most of which have wheels and can fold flat.

MrPlatts, if you are still in need, let me know. I have a hard sided case in my garage which you can borrow. I'm in the South Hills.
