BikeFest 2012 Event Callout

scott
2012-06-18 17:45:30

Maybe I'll put this here to gauge interest.

100 mile mixed surface ride, taking place mostly in the city.

Early Saturday morning (Aug 18th)start, plenty of places to bail if needed. Stops for food an water, perhaps even a aid station in my yard.

Pace will be sporty, not racy. Thinking 8 hours or less to finish.

Pavement, trails, some tame single track.

You interested?

@Eric: Interested.

If I'm around, I'd be up for at least part of it.

if there are fewer knee-wrecking 10% grade climbs than the 80 mile 'all neighborhoods' tour, id consider it.

My friend and I have been kicking around the idea of hosting a cycling-themed trivia night at OTB or Brillo Box. Would have to hustle to make it happen for BikeFest though.

Anything think that sounds like fun?

Pencil it in!!!

We have a few details to wrap up still, but planning is underway for version 2 of the

Try-A-Bike Jamboree!

Sunday, August 12

Bud Harris Cycling Track

(a.k.a. "The Oval" on Washington Blvd.)

On another thread we're discussing doing the all neighborhood ride at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/914682. The current plan is to start at Penn & 34th, August 18 at 8 am. This is a challenging ride, 81 miles with some pretty much Dirty Dozen class hills.

jonawebb
2012-06-20 14:32:31

I've always wanted to do a ride of architecture around the city. Maybe stuff by Hornbostel, Scheibler, modern pre-fab in Shadyside, downtown. etc.

Would anyone be interested?

sarapgh2
2012-06-20 16:57:30

Great idea, Sara! I'd definitely ride to check out and learn about cool architecture.

I'll start working on a map for the , hmmm, Steel City Dirty Century?

eric

Pseuda, I will be away for the try-a-bike...again. Gah. :/

edmonds59
2012-06-21 10:48:13

@Eric, from the other thread here are the suggestions for the name of the ride:

Crush the Burghhoods.

'Rahn the Tahn (n'at)"

Bike the Burghs.

ninety (?) boro bike tour.

80 Borough Tour!

Heinz Catch Up Yinz'r twelve neighborhoods behind tour?

Le Tour De Pittsburgh or The Tour of Pittsburgh

Le Tour de Hoods?

Hoods N' 'At.

TERRIBLE TOUR!!!!! (my favorite)

Terrible Tooor an'nat...

Steel City Dahntown Tour an'nat

Rahn the Tahn

Terrible Tour Rahn' Tahn.

Flock of Coronaries.

I think that's all of them. Remember, it's 81 miles not a century, though it's sure gonna feel like it is.

jonawebb
2012-06-21 12:56:29

@jonawebb, I believe Eric was talking about something distinct from the all-neighborhoods ride. Mixed-surface century-ish in and around town, not a serpentine on-road visit to every 'hood.

Thanks Dan. When I'm rich I'll hire you as my press secretary.

No problem. You can pay me in Free Radicals and accessories.

reddan
2012-06-21 16:40:06

I'm interested in the all-neighborhood ride, the mixed-surface ride (I would likely exercise the option to bail) and also the architecture ride. They all sound great!

2012-06-21 18:06:52

What type of bike would you suggest for your ride, Eric? Cross bike? Road bike with fatter tires? Downhill bike (heh)? I guess it would depend on bike handling skills a bit also?

stefb
2012-06-21 19:49:10

@stefb, any bike you ride Penn ave with should work.

marko82
2012-06-21 20:12:46

Ha I do NOT ride on penn for that reason

stefb
2012-06-21 20:27:47

I'll be leading the "Twelve Bridges, Three Rivers, Twenty One Miles" ride on Saturday, 8/11, at 11:00 am. I think. Right now, I can't remember exactly.

A ride map is here

@Pseudacris and reddan - I'm looking forward to the Jamboree, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

teamdecafweekend
2012-06-22 01:59:43

I'm tentatively planning to ride a road bike with sturdy 28mm tires. I am dumb and often ride my road bike on trails.

A cross bike is a good choice, a skinny tired 29er could do all right too.

I'm looking for vendors interested in a Bike Swap Meet/flea market

2012-07-03 21:38:04

All i know is, i want a reason to buy 18ft. of light up cord and make a Tron looking bike.

cpollack
2012-07-04 09:06:56

Too late, bought 36ft. of it....found a good deal. Haha. Someone plan a light up ride!

cpollack
2012-07-04 09:19:58

Would you be willing to try to organize a light up ride?

scott
2012-07-05 12:12:53

I would.

stefb
2012-07-07 02:52:09

Sorry, i forget to check this site often. Been out of town.

Down to help/plan Stef!

2012-07-08 23:00:38

There are now over 60 events on the calendar! Keep 'em coming. Let's beat last year's record of 70.

scott
2012-07-11 19:43:50

Anyone running the PAPA pinball ride this year?

lou-m
2012-07-11 20:02:43

Thinking about a monday night/tuesday morning ride through the city starting at about 1am. A friend and I have been doing them, and they're lots of fun, and the city is deserted at that time on that night.

rubberfactory
2012-07-16 23:39:51

I would participate. I'm pretty much nocturnal no matter how hard I try to adopt a sleep schedule like a real adult, so why not?

2012-07-16 23:54:52

I'm thinking just a short ride, maybe 10-15 miles, maybe end at a diner (if there's a 24 hour place around that's not ritter's - I like ritter's but I don't know anyone else who does)

rubberfactory
2012-07-17 02:24:22

Sounds cool, I miss the midnight flocks and FAN. Also, f em if they don't like ritter's.

salty
2012-07-17 03:06:13

It will probably be more at a "party ride" pace. I've never been on a midnight flock (since I work early Saturday mornings), but my understanding is that they're a little faster than the other flocks

Also, most people who I know only like ritter's when they're drunk. I have a soft spot for nearly all crappy diner food, so I love ritter's.

rubberfactory
2012-07-17 03:17:05

so is flock doing a light up ride? i don't want to step on any toes. i don't see anything listed yet. i was shooting for the last saturday of bike fest.

stefb
2012-07-17 04:33:35

Flock is just doing a normal party ride on the 17th (just added to the BikeFest calendar within the past couple of days). So go for it!

2012-07-17 15:55:57

Does anyone know if Friendship park is open at night? I can't think of anywhere to meet at 1am. Trying to make the ride start close to my house, because I'm lazy.

rubberfactory
2012-07-17 17:53:02

alright, I submitted, here's the info:

The city at night is beautiful. On a weeknight, it's even better! It's a completely different world. Nearly no pedestrians, far less traffic, a significantly lower chance of being hassled by drunk people. It makes for a more fun ride through town!

Meet at the center circle of Friendship Park on Monday night (Technically Tuesday Morning, August 7th) at 1am.

Ride will be approximately 10-15 miles at a relaxed pace, no drops.

Helmets strongly encouraged, lights required. We will stop at red lights and stop signs, stay in one lane, and let cars pass when safe to do so.

We'll end at Ritter's Diner in Bloomfield at around 4am. Remember that Ritter's is cash only but there is an ATM inside

In the event of rain, we will postpone by exactly one week, until August 14th.

rubberfactory

nice! that sounds great.

I'm looking for someone who might be willing to help a certain local whiskey distiller put on a Whiskey Rebellion ride.

erok
2012-07-26 16:30:42

Man, it always seems the rides i wanna go are when i work. :( I guess it doesn't help i have the least normal schedule in the world. Would anyone be down for a late night ride sometime later in the week?? Wed-Friday?? Same as this Mon. night ride just on a different day?

cpollack
2012-07-26 16:41:44

This one's on a Monday night because I have a very abnormal schedule. Seriously though, there should be more rides for people with odd hours.

rubberfactory
2012-07-26 16:56:49

Keep it simple: whiskey tasting followed by foot-down in the Wiggle parking lot.

ndanger
2012-07-26 16:57:48

Yeah, i work weekends, so anything then is out for me which sucks because stuff always happens on weekends! Us night owl/abnormal sleepers need rides too! Haha.

cpollack
2012-07-26 17:08:59

Yeah, I work anywhere from 4:30-7:30am, and my weekend is Tuesday and Wednesday. So this is going to be my "Friday" night bike ride.

rubberfactory
2012-07-26 17:10:24

what do Roberto Clemente, beer, public pools, the Golden Girls, underwear, abandoned steel mills, bridges, hills, and hollows have in common?

Pittsburgh's BikeFest!
