I have mixed feeling about the eye contact thing that the author keeps refering to. I have personally found that some drivers, especially those prone to be assholes, take making eye contact as a challenge. I usually commute to oakland via liberty->aiken-> ellsworth. I constantly have problems with people making left turns right in front of me and most of the time its after eye contact. Its like im somehow challenging their manhood or something.

At least you see them doing it. It's my opinion that drivers who see you and do something aggressive are less likely to hit you than drivers who don't see you and do something stupid.
Can't say I have any proof, though.
I have the opposite opinion. I think eye contact is very important to anticipating the motorist's action. If I don't make eye contact, I assume the car is going to pull out in front of me. I've never felt someone was more aggressive because I made eye contact with them.
