Car-insurance, who pays for a hospital trip, & what to do in a crash

Hey everyone,

We've been doing some research to try to demystify what bicyclists can do to insure themselves and what we should do in the event of a crash. It's culminated so far in this post. Check it out and post questions or further insights in the comments section.

The current issue of Urban Velo has a great article on the matter.....

From my whole experience with this crap, this is all accurate and on point.

One problem I ran into and should mention is this stuff is only valid for people with PA insurance. If the relative you live with carries auto insurance for their car registered in Ohio or New York (or California). The insurance company will likely tell you to bug off. Same with the car that hits you. Many states don't have no-fault medical coverage, and you will have to prove fault to get the insurance companies to pay out. Moral of my story is, get insurance in the state you live in, and make sure the place your car is parked matches what the insurance company has on file.

That is good. Thanks for sharing, Sara. It's similar to our "in a crash?" section (that's also printed on our membership cards). http://bike-pgh.org/resources/in-a-crash/

The hope of the article I just posted was to help bicyclists before they're in a crash and answer the questions "who is responsible for paying for me to get treated? and is there any type of insurance i can carry that will further help me if I'm in this situation?"

Dan, if you could post that in the comments section of the blog post that would be terrific! Thanks.

Thanks for posting this. I think I need to review the "tort" options on my current car policy. Definitely important to file a police report & get checked out. A few years ago, a guy spun out of control during a snow storm and nearly totaled my car. I felt fine right after the accident, but the next day, boy did the pain set in...the wreck was probably at less than 30mph.
