Carmageddon: People Liked It!

Timothy Egan writes a mostly positive op-ed piece in today's New York Times about the side-benefits of LA's "Carmageddon." (Weekend closure of 405).

Carmageddon’s Big Surprise

LA is an odd place.

I was there about three weeks ago, staying in the vicinity of USC. The surrounding area is Latino and not especially well-off. What struck me was the number of bikers on the road (also, the Mexican flags on houses in the side streets). Sure, it was all crappy mountain bikes, but it did feel like the whole neighborhood moved on 2 wheels. I would hazard that quite a few people in the area don't have cars and have to get around otherwise. And that all those videos of hill-bombing hipsters are not really representative of the norm in LA.
