Close call, nothing new

First let begin this thread by writing that i was counting cyclists this morning at the Schenley Golf Course, and IT WAS AWESOME! Cyclists are so friendly! Second, on my way home, coming down Forbes Avenue toward Braddock, crossing the bridge and signaling that i was moving into the lane as the bike lane was ending, a Bucci Landscaping truck brushed by me close enough that i could feel the truck barely touching the side of my hand. Fortunately, i kept control of my bike, and he was driving fast enough that as i startled a bit i didn't lose control. He was also pulling a trailer, which swerved just in front of me--i had slowed to avoid running into the trcuk as it passed. As he had the green light turning right onto Braddock, i couldn't say anything to him--and, i most likely wouldn't have if the light had been red. Any suggested recourse? I plan to call Bucci and tell them that their truck almost took me out. Anyo other suggestions? In conclusion, BICYCLISTS ARE SO FRIENDLY. Thus, I am going to focus on my early morning counting and NOT the inane Bucci driver!

It would seem that one of the potential problems of these types of driver related issues stems from time-management...they drive like bats out of hell because they are running. late.

Since you have the company info for the driver, perhaps a polite yet fact based call to the company can have them educate thier drivers to be more non-motorist aware.

Glad to hear things didn't end resulting in a need for medical care though.

Thanks a bunch. Seemed to have missed that thread, Colin. I'm on hold right now with Bucci Landscaping. We'll see what happens. Thanks to both of you above.

If you do pursue this through the business owner, do be prepared for this to go either way, i.e. possibly not the way the Clean Care Linen thing went. People have called businesses and had the owners tell them "F you get off the road".

Be prepared to let them know your next step will be to file a police report.

julieb - those trailors are super dangerous. They bounce all around behind the tow vehicle and often have stuff hanging off the sides. Thank goodness you were not wiped out.

A call to the company is a good start. you can guage their tone about the call when you speak to someone. Hopefully they will take it seriously.

Good luck.

Thanks again everyone. So, lesson learned today: do not trust one's memory. I am confident in the name of the company i saw on the truck. However, i was not so good with the number i thought i had memorized--@ least the last seven digits. When i was finally taken off hold a rep. from a tile company answered. When i aked about Bucci Landscaping they knew nothing. I've looked online, in the YP and the business section. There is no Bucci Landscaping listed in Pa. Thanks again for your help. I have pedaled through the neighborhood, and will keep an eye out for the truck while running errands in a few. They were heading though Regent Square, I believe. So, perhaps i'll head that way. Argh! A hard lesson i will not forget.

Could easily be DiBucci and Sons Stone and Concrete.

A clear case of a violation of the other piece of the four-foot rule, i.e., right-hooking. If he could not safely get both truck and trailer past you and around the corner before you got there, then he was in violation of that law.

I did see "landscaping" under the name. I'll do al little more research. Thanks, jonawebb!

Di Bucci and Sons is a local concrete, stone, and brick contractor, but it doesn't look like they do landscaping; there's also a Bucci Plumbing in Homestead.

With landscaping it's entirely possible the owner is the guy driving the truck, the truck is the office, and the sign on the side is the way to get in touch with them.

Remember, with landscaping companies in particular, many are quite small. They may have just the one truck. Don't be surprised to find that the owner who you call for some support is also the driver who nearly ran you off the road.
