I recently heard about it too. Unfortunately haven't had a chance to ride it or check it out.
Dornbush Street
Was just scoping some mean hills that weren't in the dirty dozen and heard about this one.
From the google street view it looks like an absolute beast. Anyone have experience with it? Is it just a little too far east to be in the dozen?? To my eyes it seems very worthy otherwise.
dornbush looks like, distance- and steepness-wise, it might be the best in the area. that doesn't necessarily make for a good dirty dozen hill, though, especially with the turnout over the past several-to-many years. there is no low-traffic lead-up to the hill, which kills any good racing prospects. i haven't biked up it myself, but it is definitely on the list.
and if you're interested in other awesome non-dd hills, have a go at kendall street from upper lawrenceville into stanton heights. absurd steepness, plus cobbles. very dirty dozen-esque.
Out west-ish, try Churchill St in McKees Rocks, or even better, Hodgson Avenue on the Ingram-Pittsburgh border.
There are some seriously steep hills out my way (I live in a little neighborhood called Blackridge that is nestled between Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, and Churchill).
2 miles down Greensburg Pike are some monster gradients - there's a dude who has organized a group ride for the Woodland Hills Foundation that covers most of them. Windsor Ave is like riding up a wall. Similar feeling to Canton Ave - times 2 because Windsor has two sides to it, intersected by another really steep (and long) hill - Marion Ave. Rossmore St. is brick and concrete and has "steps" that are pretty steep as well. This has been my Dirty Dozen training ground.
Anyways - I did see Dornbush on my ride Sunday - but didnt attempt it. Maybe tomorrow I'll try it.
there's a good little climb right here in morningside too. almost exactly 1 mile and a good bit of steep with just a touch of cobbles.
Can I get a non-3D link to that spot? I'm trying not to download yet another piece of software.
just click the 3d button next to the directions
The 3d is an awesome time waster. I've been checking out hills and how they fit in the Pittsburgh topography for the past 20 minutes. Woohoo!
