family trail ride today

So after a fantastic lunch at OTB, my wife and two daughters (9 and 7) rolled down the south side trail toward the Glenwood Bridge. About halfway to the end of the trail, we stopped for a water break. The three ladies off the trail, and myself barely on the trail. An older guy with thick black curely hair in a pony tail and on a road bike comes flying by and makes a sarcastic remark about stopping "on" the trail.

Raelly dude? So sorry to get in your way while we get some water. I assume if there was enough room for you to pass and mumble a remark, we were probably in the clear. Thanks for making my daughter's trail experience fantastic...maybe you should get back in your car and just try to run me over.

Further more, if you have to say anything, have the stones to slow down and say it, don't go flying by and mumble it.

Sorry to vent...this guy just rubbed me the wrong way.....we still had a great 12 mile ride.

Look on the bright side: you had a good day riding the trails, and Mr. Serious will die alone, unmourned and unloved.

Sahside Trail is for moseyin'. You wanna move fast, use Muriel, Carson, or cross the river & ride the Jail Trail.

1. I think it's awesome that you took your family out on the trail. Your kids will remember that forever and someday they'll do it with their kids. I hope you all get out there again.

2. Re the solo-jerk on a road bike: for some reason, God made a lot of people who decided to become assholes. I don't know why She did that. There's too many of them to kill and they've got rules about that anyway. The best revenge is to live well.

It is usually annoying to be surrounded by people who want to go slower or faster than you do.

As with driving: keep cool, share the road, and don't let the turkeys get you down. I hope your family had a good time despite some rudeness.

Thanks everyone, we did have a great time, and will for sure be back on the trail every weekend this fall. My daughters love it.

maybe there was something in the air yesterday. on a trip to the strip district from shadyside, through polish hill, i had two people yell at us from their cars. the first one was going over 28th street bridge, with no traffic but us and this car, and the driver yelled out the window, "you're not a car!" i gave a friendly wave and responded "thanks! i know!" she, well past me at the point, gave two beeps of the horn and continued on.

the next was on neville. we waited at a light, then after it changed and traffic cleared, we turned left. someone traveling through the intersection behind us yelled something about "sidewalk". he could have been yelling at a squirrelly looking pedestrian, but just the same, what are these people doing out on a sunday afternoon? this sort of thing never happens to me.

I like to respond to side walk problems (either comments like above or cyclists on busy sidewalks) by calmly repeating "sideWALK!"

@edmonds - it was almost like she was pointing out exactly why i was so much happier than she was. or maybe she was acknowledging the difference between road users and their vehicles, which we often conflate, to everyone's detriment. either way, it was the only appropriate response.
