Flattest Route

Here's a neat website for navigating SF. Edit: It actually works for other locations, too!

pretty cool, but i wouldnt say it always gives the 'flattest' route... itd be nice if it had a slider that let you adjust how much youre willing to go out of the way (adding distance) with the trade-off of getting lower grades

Pgh version would have to incorporate a "You can't get there from here" response.

Pgh version would have buttons for pens/ pirates/ stillers games messing with the flow.

Really, what you want is for Google to make an advanced version of their routing site, so you could adjust how much it cares about hills, bike-safe routes, etc. This flattest route software is just a version of the fancy Google routing, but with flattest set to max, and without all the bells and whistles that make the Google mapping so useful.

Pittsburgh version would give you turn by turn directions based on "where _____________ used to be."

Damn, what an idea. Can Google add a layer to it's mapping specifically for Pittsburgh that users can add where things used to be? Or does such a thing already exist?!? So awesome.

Well, you can always use Google Map Maker to add places (click in the lower right). But the edits get reviewed and I'm not sure how they'll react to having a bunch of no longer existing places added. OTOH they have no problem with non-existent bike trails (try looking at bike routing between Braddock and Nine Mile Run), so it might be worth a shot.

'flattest' is a misnomer. as far as i can tell, it's really just a tool for showing you the grade of your route. which would be nice, except it doesn't understand bridges. for a ride from lawrenceville to oakland, it gave me the standard route: up 44th, down Millvale, and it showed a massive drop and then rise in the second half of the run...which i eventually realized was the millvale ave bridge.

Seemed to work OK, modulo the above, in Chrome; haven't tried other browsers.
