Gene Hackman hit by a car

OK, so alcohol was not a factor. On whose account? Does it matter whose?

I find it irritating that they have to mention that he didn't have a helmet on. Was that a causative factor?

Where did this happen? Has there been any history of bike-car incidents there? And of this type? How would this spot classify in a Popsicle Index test?

We really need more details here.

So much for no anti-bike comments

carost: Bicycling is dangerous on roads with cars. Bicycling at 81 is foolish. Ride in your house.

That's nowhere near as hateful as bike story comments normally are.

Glad to hear that he is ok. At his age, bones are usually osteoporotic.

Gene Hackman, at 81, is still more hardcore than most people. I wouldn't be surprised if the Toyota had more damage than he did. He could probably dent the fender just by looking at it.

He's the only actor that I find incredibly irritating but love him for it. I'm not sure he's ever played a character the audience is supposed to like.

+1000

I have been investigating this route somewhat. I want to ride from Miami to Key West this time of year. It's supposedly marked as a bike route almost the entire way and as Marko82 points out where he was riding there was a bike lane. There are also buffered lanes in each direction on the highway that runs parallel to it.

I saw Hoosiers! I just don't remember liking his character in it (ok, I don't remember liking anything in that movie).

Royal Tennenbaum is my favorite of his characters, but I am in love with that whole movie. Bird Cage and Unforgiven I liked him despite his characters too. Just seems like a nice guy who plays bad very well. Think I'll look for his novels at the library, apparently he's a good writer.
