That is what I would be afraid of.
Rans boasts of their hill-climbing abilities, but I'm a bit skeptical.
I contacted Rans about the possibility of getting a HammerTruck with a Rholoff. I figure, If I'm gonna spend that much, I might as well get what I want. They were unhelpful.
I note that the linked article suggests front racks are a good idea, for weight distribution issues.
Hammertruck/Rohloff? Sounds interesting, but is the Rohloff rated for heavy use, like tandems and cargo bikes?
yes, although there is a minimum input ratio (and it's higher for tandems and possibly cargo bikes):
but, you get pretty low gearing with that, it's under 20" for 700c wheels IIRC, and obviously even less for smaller wheels.
