I was wondering why the brake levers were so funny.

Very nice. I'm a big fan of redline bikes. Between my girlfriend and myself we own 5 redlines. I dont even know how many miles are on them anymore. Id guess at least 1000 on each bike. The only issue I can say we have had has been some broken spokes but that is most likely caused by pulling around a trailer and lots of weight.

Nice! I was looking at that very bike (in a 54) last week at Thick. I ended up with the Conquest Classic. Congrats!

That's not even a step up. This is a whole other world of cycling for you! Great choice.

Only thing is that this bike weighs pretty much nothing, especially compared to every other bike I've ever owned. Going around corners is terrifying.

yeah, I've been using 2 different u-locks (one for each wheel) for a few months now.

as a side note, someone above said that the thumb buttons down-shift, but this isn't strictly true. the thumbs release tension on the cable, which in the rear translates to a higher gear ratio (i.e. a bigger gear).

So far, it's great! a little easier on my back and shoulders (I didn't notice how much they hurt on my old bike until today, riding around on this one)

I was worried that the lower brake levers would be too uncomfortable for me, so while looking into buying a bike, I sought our something that also had the second set up high. It seems that both sets of these brakes are okay, though.

Next month, I'm buying a mirror for it for sure (I can't not have a mirror anymore...I try to check my mirror when I'm walking, at this point)

Congrats! Don't be like me and fail to realize that you can brake from the hoods! :p I haven't moved into STIs yet, so thanks ahead of time for telling me how to operate the shifters.

@headloss yeah i think that was the #1 thing i had to get used to going from MTB to road bike. then it took me a long time to get confident i could generate enough braking power to ride around that way.

I have a conquest classic also, rzod. It is my heaviest bike and thus my least favorite to ride. Well, I should say that it isn't as fun to ride as my single speed or my light road bike, but it is a very nice, solid bike. I wish I had the brakes in two positions like RF's. That is definitely nice.

When I had drop bars on my Bianchi, it was equipped with cross levers to supplement the standard ones...I really liked that setup.

RF's new toy is making me want to go back to it this spring, just for fun.

Having the second set of interruptor brakes was pretty much a requirement for me getting a bike with drop bars. I feel pretty good about braking power on them and on the hoods, but I still feel that "max power" is best obtained from being down in the drops.

I agree about the cross levers, so I had Thick install some before I took the bike.

Just out of curiosity, what size is the frame? someone mentioned that it's a redline - which model is it?

I think it's a 48" frame? I don't remember.

I had never really been aware that you could get brake levers like that. I've been thinking about getting a second bike with drop bars one of these days, and I will definitely want those now that I have seen them. Awesome.

stef's conquest is the older model that is chrome plated under the powder coat. and it has a super heavy duty rack (surly nice rack) that adds a good bit of weight.

also she is a baby about it.

I tried both brakes today. The brakes in the drop handlebars aren't as hard on my back as I thought, but they weren't as smooth as the higher set (I don't know the real names of each set of brake levers). The bumpy brakes made me uncomfortable, but switching between each them wasn't as difficult and uncomfortable as it was on other bikes I've ridden.

RF do you know about riding "on the hoods"? I did not until I bought a road bike. You put the thumb/forefinger area on top of the brake lever nubs and your pinky and ring finger will curl around onto the brake levers. It definitely takes getting used to and you have to build up strength in your hands but now I spend probably 95% of the time in that position.

not really - I was riding with my thumbs on top, and the rest of my hand around the brake levers themselves.

Congrats! Real nice bike. You can break and shift from the hoods. And it should your main riding position. Well, when you go up to hill you can shift hands close to center and away from the hoods. Bike is more stable in this position.

@rzod, I have the conquest classic too. in my case it's my lighter bike. the other bike I have is a vintage mixte.

nice bike! i also own a (2010) conquest sport and i love it, i put more miles on that thing than any of my other bikes. it's great in the winter with slightly knobby 32's, but as soon as the weather get's nice (ie. 2 weeks ago) i rock 23 slicks and it's like a rocket sled!

It seems link we could have an all Redline ride!
