Jail Trail alternate suggestions?

I'm planning on riding into Squirrel Hill tonight. My usual route would have been Jail Trail to Junction Hollow to Forbes.

It looks like my alternative are Carson St or 2nd St. Any other suggestion? Both of those seem really unappealing in rush hour traffic.

Thanks!

The side streets in the South Side are in pretty decent shape at this point, at least the wider streets on the river side of Carson. You could cut across there to the Birmingham Bridge, then take Forbes.

I've been doing that to get home from work, but at rush hour, traffic on Forbes approaching Oakland is slowed to nearly a stop, so it's pretty manageable.

Another, slightly out of the way option, would be taking the Birmingham Bridge to Kirkpatrick, and riding up and over the Hill to Centre Avenue. Traffic would certainly be lighter.

Depending on your start point, you might want to either go up Forbes the whole way or even consider Liberty ->Aiken -> 5th -> Wilkins or something similar.

I'd second Mick's Strip route.

I took Forbes the whole way in. Thanks guys! It was really nice thru Uptown and then a total parking lot from the ramp all the way to Squirrel Hill. Still, it was nice just to get out.

another route could be crossing the smithfield st. bridge, then take the riverfront trail which starts behind station square right by the mon river. take it all the way to 18th st. then work your way up to the birmingham bridge. 5th av. shouldn't be a bad route either, might be safer than forbes. incase you want to try a different route

Has anyone taken a look at the Jail Trail today? I peeked yesterday where it is closest to 2nd Avenue, and it was starting to thaw on its own, but I wonder if it might be ridable after today.

I do not like riding 2nd Avenue during the week. Had one car lean on their horn yesterday- it was a humongus hummer- I guess they did not have enough room on the road for their behemoth.

I could see some patches of pavement from my view high above on the Birmingham Bridge this morning. Still looks like there's a lot of snow though. Maybe some rain today will help.

Or make it worse.

That person probably had to make extensive personal sacrifice to obtain that hummer rather than a safer and more effective vehicle. You are a threat to their world view.

The jail might have been easier when it was frozen solid, rather than mashed potatoes and icy patches.

to helen s. that's exactly why I personally don't like biking on roads with cars, because of motorists like that. I respect biking on roads though, but it's not for me
