More men than women ride their bikes to work due to skirts

I joke, but it was the first line of this article in the Trib.

I'd argue it has more to do with intimidating streets and aggressive drivers, but...

anyway, i thought these stats from the article were interesting.
stats

That puts Pittsburgh at 1% of all commuters riding bikes to work. It also means that 1.8% of all men that commute ride their bikes. that might not sound that impressive, but look at this in comparison to these stats from this article (also US census data):
1. Portland (3.5 percent)
2. Minneapolis (2.4 percent)
3. Seattle (2.3 percent)
4. Tucson, AZ (2.2 percent)
5. San Francisco (1.8 percent)
6. Sacramento, CA (1.8 percent)
7. Washington, D.C. (1.7 percent)
8. Oakland, CA (1.5 percent)
9. Honolulu (1.4 percent)
9. Denver (1.4 percent)

Among the 50 large cities in the analysis Kansas City, Memphis, Indianapolis, Wichita, Omaha, and San Antonio have the lowest percentage of bicycle commuters. The percentage of bicycle commuters in all of those cities is 0.1 percent or less.

i guess i was kind of surprised

I saw more than 10 bikers on my way to work this morning. Most of which were moseying down Penn Avenue. There was about an 80-20 split between guys and gals.

/ this biking thingy is catchy.

I figured I'd recycle a thread, rather than post a new one. I liked the title, too.

I just saw this post. IS THIS SERIOUS?????

I never knew anything better in life than riding a bike in a skirt.

Riding a bike with agressive geometry means you are bent over and most people think you are wearing shorts but if they see your underwear they think it's spandex short shorts anyway.

I think this calls for a Skirted Critical Mass. I just found my old red skirt that used to wear in my very brief cameo as a bike courier.

I commuted in from Millvale this morning in a skirt. Not a problem in the least. I think I even successfully avoided flashing anyone while mounting/dismounting.

I usually wear padded shorts on the longer ride from home, but it was great to go straight from bike rack to desk without the need to change clothes.

I'll do this again. The skirt was not an impediment, and might even have been liberating, in a way.
