Mt Davis-Cumberland-Meyersdale scouting ride, Saturday 07/24/2010

[X-posted from Pgh-Randos list]

I'm planning to scout the Mt Davis-Cumberland-Meyersdale portion of the new 400K route this weekend, starting in Meyersdale and climbing over Mt Davis to pick up the route at Mt. Davis and Savage Rd. It'll be roughly 75 miles, with plenty of gentle rolling hills to keep the boredom level down.

Route and elevation profile here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/123485.

I'd like to get started around 9 AM in Meyersdale; I plan to drive down from da 'Burgh starting 6:30/7:00 AM or so, park up near the trail, stock up at Sheetz, and let the good times roll.

If anyone's feeling the need to stretch their legs this weekend with a moderately-tough-but-not-insanely-long ride, this should qualify nicely. As usual, scouting means slightly slower(and this is me saying this, so pack a lunch...), pauses to make notes, stare at maps and scratch head, etc.

(Yes, Virginia, there's hills in them thar hills. Mostly ___long___ and shallow, but I'm sure there's a steepish bit or two hidden somewhere in there.)

I like to wanna do this.

Is this Caturday or Sunday? Meet in Meyersdale or in Pittsburgh? Are we actually going to Mt. Davis, because if so, then we'd have to hang a left on to Wolf Rock Road 10.3 miles into the trip?

Saturday. I could fit one bike/passenger if anyone wants to carpool, but I'm planning to meet other interested parties in Meyersdale around 9 or so.

I'll double-check the route, but I believe it's Mt Davis Rd out of Meyersdale all the way to Savage Rd; that's where the scout of the official route starts. The climb from Meyersdale over Mt Davis isn't part of the official route; it's just an added bonus. ;-)

Yeah, but taking Wolf Rock to Christner will cut out the -/+600ft. of uppsees n' downs around the mountain by just riding the ridgeline - you sick, sick bastage.

Hey, I'm open to any suggestions with regards to cutting out elevation on the way to the intersection with Savage Rd. There will be plenty o' climbing love later in the day, believe you me...

Short of circling the parking lot 900 times, right?

I'll meet yous at the trailhead parking lot in meyersdale.

I can fit one extra bike and person.

Sorry I missed the 300K, but I was feeling fat and lazy so I slept in and did a century with Bruce and Sarah (PMTCC) instead.

The 300K? Heh. You woulda enjoyed that one, methinks.

Come out for the full 400. We trimmed much of the needless cruelty by routing the return leg on the trail from Meyersdale to Connellsville, but it'll still be quite the ride.

If my flabby form comes around I'll be there for the 400K. (Cuz I'd hate to miss out on some needless suffering.)

Plan for a long day. The 300K scout took me and Bill something like 17 hours; while the stretch of Pure Hell via Rockwood betwixt Meyersdale and Connellsville has been removed, I don't expect the 400 to wrap up in much less than 20 hours at best. Midnight is my vague goal, but anything before the arse-crack of dawn will suffice.

Hmmmm.

Getting lost all night on small curvy mountain roads with no names after riding a few hundred miles during the day? A thunderstorm or two and you guys are all set up for a GREAT time!

We're only doing ~75 miles on Saturday, right? All this talk of 300k and 400k has me reevaluating this weekend.

@Mick: Type II fun is still fun. Really!

@sloaps: Only 75 miles. (Barring navigational difficulty, but that never happens on a scouting ride.)

Original thought deleted. But on another note, did you want to caravan to Meyersdale?

We could. Bill's riding with me, we should be leaving the North Side by 6:45 or so.

I'm Flocking tonight, so swing by the ride or give me a call after 8 and we'll figure it out from there.
